FAQ

  • What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body. The human body has a network of energy channels, or meridians, through which vital energy, or qi, flows. When this energy flow is disrupted or blocked, it can cause pain, illness, and other health problems. Acupuncture works by stimulating these specific points in the body to restore the flow of qi and promote the body's natural healing mechanisms. Modern research suggests that acupuncture may also work by stimulating the release of natural painkillers and anti-inflammatory substances in the body, as well as improving blood circulation and reducing stress. Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for a wide range of health conditions and is often used in combination with other therapies to promote overall health and wellness.

Eastern medicine looks at health as a wonderfully nuanced interaction between many aspects of our lives including who we are, the bodies we are in, the choices we make, the things that happen to us, and the culture we are living in. It excels at preventative medicine, restoring proper function, harmonizing complex conditions, and supporting the psyche.

As a practitioner of Eastern medicine, it is my job to provide you with personalized treatment (acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, ear seeds, linaments) designed to help your body and mind heal themselves.

  • Is acupuncture safe and does it hurt?

Acupuncture is generally considered to be a safe and non-invasive treatment. The needles used in acupuncture are very thin, about the width of a human hair, and are typically inserted just below the skin's surface, making it a relatively painless experience. Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort during an acupuncture treatment, although some may sensations of movement, warmth, dull ache, or heaviness when the needles are first inserted.

  • What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is a versatile and effective treatment option that can be used to address a wide range of health conditions. It is commonly used to treat pain, including back pain, neck pain, and headaches. It can also be effective in treating a variety of conditions related to women's health, such as menstrual cramps, infertility, and menopausal symptoms. Acupuncture has also been shown to be helpful in treating anxiety, depression, and other emotional and mental health conditions. Additionally, acupuncture may be beneficial for digestive issues, respiratory conditions, and allergies.

  • How many acupuncture sessions will I need?

Acupuncture treatment is personalized to each individual, and it works cumulatively. The goal is to build on progress, so it's important to return for treatment before symptoms worsen. If too much time elapses between appointments, progress slows and can end up costing more in time and money. Typically, acute or complex conditions require twice-weekly visits for the first 1-2 weeks, then once a week as long as symptoms continue to improve. Once symptoms are stabilized or reduced, monthly visits for preventative maintenance may be recommended. Basic cases take around 5-6 treatments, while more chronic or challenging cases can take 10 or more treatments. Some patients may choose to continue weekly or biweekly visits for self-exploration, personal growth, or spiritual practice.
